QUESTION:
How do I become a Morley Endorser?

ANSWER:
Please note that to be considered for an endorsement, there should be some basis for the endorsement, such as:

1) Already use and stand behind Morley product(s) as an integral part of your set up and tone. You cannot endorse something you do not yet use.

2) You perform regularly to a following of fans. It is best for both parties if the artist has already gained some level of popularity and following prior to seeking and endorsement.

3) You should have a gear and/or endorsement page of your website or social media page. It is easier to procure an endorsement if you are already promoting the gear you use.

4) Please understand that there are many, many artists seeking endorsements. Many companies will have limitations to whom they grant endorsements to, being endorsed by other brands does not guarantee acceptance of endorsement from a different company. Each company has their own guidelines.

5) If you believe in the gear you are already using, stick with it even if that company denies an endorsement. If you only endorse something because that was the only company willing to work with you, the essence of the endorsement is lost. Be faithful to the gear and brands you like that help you create great music. It will pay off in the end.

QUESTION:
When I use two amplifiers, I get a humming noise, how do I fix that?

ANSWER:
You are experiencing a common Ground Loop (also referred to as Ground Hum, 60 Hz Hum, 60 Cycle Hum and Loop Antenna). This can occur anytime multiple piece of gear with 3 prong ground plugs are hooked together via the audio signal. The end result is a humming noise most commonly at the 60Hz frequency (50 Hz outside North America). This can easily solved with a Hum Exterminator or an Morley Hum Eliminator.

QUESTION:
What do symbols on George Lynch Dragon 2 Wah mean?

ANSWER:
The text on the Dragon 2 are Japanese Kanji symbols. Both are related to George Lynch in some manner.

The symbol by the 9V jack means Kamikaze (literal translation is Divine Wind), which is the same symbol on George’s Kamikaze Guitar by ESP

http://www.iguitarmag.com/magazine-editions/guitar-interactive-issue-28/reviews/esp-george-lynch-kamikaze/

The symbols on the Input and Output jacks mean Teacher/Master, which is same symbols found on George’s guitar case:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/postal-monkey-george-lynch-kamikaze-electric-guitar-case#productDetail

The symbols have nothing to do with the pedal features they appear next to, they were simply George Lynch Related Graphics.

QUESTION:
What is the difference between PLA and PVO+?

ANSWER:
1) The PLA has a Linear Taper, the PVO+ has an Audio Taper.

Linear Taper is a straight even increase in volume relative to the movement of the pedal. Most say this is great for violin-like swells and pedal steel techniques.

Audio Taper starts off slower and increases quicker towards the end of the pedal throw. Most say this is more familiar feeling and better for over volume control. For many the difference between Audio and Linear is very subtle. For those with trained ear, there is a BIG difference.

2) Both the PLA and PVO+ have a Minimum Volume Knob. On the PVO+ there is a footswitch to bypass this feature.

Minimum volume knob allows you to set two distinct volumes for Rhythm and Lead. The Minimum Volume mode lets you dial in a volume in Toe-Up position, when you go to Toe-Down you get a slightly louder volume for Lead solos. Toe-Up = Rhythm, Toe Down = Lead. On the PLA, you have to reach down and turn the Minimum Volume Knob off to use the pedal as a regular volume pedal again. On the PVO+, you simply hit the footswitch to bypass the Minimum Volume knob so that you can leave it set and use the pedal for volume control or Rhythm/Lead at the click of a switch.

3) The PLA is suited for use in an FX Loop of an amp or with instruments that have a hotter output. The PVO+ is recommended for use in the amp front input only.

Why would you want to use the volume in the FX loop? Easy: Let’s say you are using the amps distortion. If you plug your guitar into the volume pedal and then into the front amp input, as you roll the volume back you will also notice the distortion ”cleans up” and loses its drive (some players might like that but other may not). When you place a volume pedal in the FX loop and roll back the volume, the amps distortion drive and sustain will be maintained but a quieter level.

4) Lastly, since both pedals are optical, either can be used for guitar, bass, keys or other instruments. This something common to all pedals we make.

QUESTION:
I haven’t used my pedal / switch for a long time and now it doesn’t work. What happened?

ANSWER:
We use MECHANICAL switches that self-clean each time they are pressed. This means that the WORST thing you can do is never click the switch for extended period of time. The switch internals may have tarnished to the point where they are not making connection. Try to click the switch repeatedly about 10 to 15 times and try the pedal again. If this doesn’t work, you may need to contact store where purchased for warranty service.

QUESTION:
My pedal is squeaking. What can I do about it?

ANSWER:
Do the following:

1) Loosen the treadle bolts until you can pull treadle bolt out about 1/8”. Place a 5/8″ wrench on the nut on the inside of the treadle rocker bolt and use a Phillips screwdriver to back the nut off about 1/8” but not all the way off as it can be difficult to get the nut back on. Pull treadle bolt out 1/8”

2) Using a Q-tip put a little Vaseline around the treadle bolt shaft .This will add lubrication to the friction spot and eliminate the squeaking. Tighten the treadle bolt all the way tight then back off one quarter turn.

3) On switchless spring loaded pedals, if 1 and 2 above doesn’t work, apply a small drop of lubricating oil (WD-40) on the spring coils and where the spring makes contact with the base and underside of the treadle.

QUESTION:
How do I maintain my distortion’s sustain and drive when using a volume pedal?

ANSWER:
When using a volume pedal in front of the amp, you will tend to lose drive and sustain as you lower the volume on the pedal (much the same as using the volume knob on your guitar). This applies to ALL volume pedals. If you wish to maintain the drive and sustain of your distortion as you decrease volume, there are two ways to do it:

1) If you are using your AMP for distortion – place the volume pedal in the effects loop of the amp. This is two jacks marked SEND and RETURN usually located on the back panels of your amp. Not all amps have this and if yours doesn’t, you’re out of luck. Placing the volume pedal in the effects loop allows you to decrease volume (at the preamp stage) and maintain the amps distortion characteristics.

2) If you are using a STOMP BOX for distortion – Make sure to place the volume pedal after the distortion in the chain of effects. This way you won’t be affecting the guitar signal to the distortion stomp box and you will maintain all distortion characteristics while decreasing volume with the volume pedal.

QUESTION:
My wah sounds fine by itself but when I use it with my distortion it sounds weak. Why?

ANSWER:
There are a few ways to solve this:

1) Try placing the wah and distortion in different setup configurations. For example, try plugging into the distortion first and then into the wah and onto the amp.

2) Try altering the tone knobs of the distortion slightly to allow the wah to work better in certain frequencies.

3) Try a different model better suited for your distortion tonal range. This is why we have a selection of Wah pedals that have different tone ranges and frequencies.

QUESTION:
My wah pedal makes a humming/buzzing sound? What causes that?

ANSWER:
Two things can cause a hum/buzz problem:

1) Morley pedals use a REGULATED power supply. This means if you are using any other brand power supply – it will cause the pedal to hum. The solution here would be to get a Morley adapter or use a battery.

2) The other thing that can cause wah pedals (any brand) to hum is if the pedal is too close to (less than 2 feet away) power adapters from other devices/pedals or from the pedal board. The solution here is to move either the Morley pedal or the offending adapter further away from one another.

QUESTION:
Who can help with Tel-Ray Morley pedals? My rotating Tel-Ray Morley device is not working. Can you fix it?

ANSWER:
1) We no longer service the big chrome Tel-Ray Morley pedals as they have been out of production for over 35 years.

2) The common problem that happens to the rotating type devices is that the oil in the can evaporates rending the unit partially or completely inoperable.

3) The oil is Union Carbide UCON LB 65 and is expensive and difficult to buy. We do not have a source for it. There is no substitute oil that can be used.

4) In NON-rotating devices, the most common problem is the 387 bulb has burnt out. You can order new ones here: https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/bulb-morley-effects-pedals-replacement

5) There are many folks online who have created forums and communities to help each other out with old Tel-Ray Morley pedals. You can Google them.

QUESTION:
When was my Tel-Ray pedal built?

ANSWER:
The big chrome Tel-Ray Morley pedals were produced between 1971 and 1983. The serial numbers used meant nothing so it is difficult to track down the exact manufacture date. The best way to get an approximate date is to check the date codes on some electrical components.

QUESTION:
Do Morley pedals have TRUE BYPASS?

ANSWER:
We use a technique that is better than true bypass. True Bypass is a term that is widely misunderstood and looked upon as a good solution for effect pedals. The truth is that true bypass is only of benefit when the pedal is off (bypassed) hence the name ‘True Bypass’. It helps by minimizing the connections when bypassed, thus not interfering with your signal or changing your guitar tone/characteristics. But what happens when you turn ON the effect? If an effect is engineered properly, there should be no signal loss or change to the overall personality to your guitar tone…in bypass AND with the effect ON (not the case for most devices). Having said all that, one could conclude that it is important to maintain volume and tone in bypass AND effect mode. With an effect that is used frequently (like wah pedals), consistency with your tone should be a high priority. True bypass is not a consistent tone solution for any signal chain.

This is what our “True-Tone” buffer circuit does. It balances the entire signal chain from the guitar all the way to the input of the amp. This ensures the loudest possible signal without changing the overall character and tone of the guitar. This circuitry is available in all of our pedals except the Model PLA and PVO volumes (since circuitry is already at a minimum, they do not require it).

You will find that the subject of Buffer Circuits vs. True Bypass is one of controversy and sharp opinions (like analog vs. digital or tube vs. solid state). The best thing to do is experience it by trying some of our pedals out. If you are serious about your guitar tone, we are confident you will appreciate our designs.

Pete Cornish (effects/pedal board builder for David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, Sting, and many more) has a great article called ‘case against true bypass’ that also may be of interest to you:

QUESTION:
How do I get that Jason Newstead or Cliff Burton sound from Metallica?

ANSWER:
The Tribute version of the Power Fuzz Wah will allow you to get that sound. Cliff used a Morley Tel-Ray Power Fuzz Wah (Model PFW). Jason used a Morley Tel-ray Power Wah Boost (Model PWB). These have been out of production for nearly 30 years, and are almost impossible to find. Both three functions; Wah, Volume and the distortion (Boost on one, Fuzz on the other). The current version of that pedal is our Cliff Burton Tribute Power Fuzz Wah (Model PFW). We get asked this question all the time. Keep in mind that there is more to Cliffs/Jasons sound than a single pedal.

QUESTION:
Why does the switch on my pedal make a popping noise when switched?

ANSWER:
Mechanical switches by their nature will make a small “pop” when clicked. The click should be minimal and not heard while playing at any considerable volume. There are switching boxes that contain silent switching circuitry but they cost more and many say change the tone of your guitar.
